Pukekohe designer Kyla Hunt wins award at Trends International Design Awards

This kitchen designed by Kyla has just received a Highly Commended Award at the Trends International Design Awards, and was subsequently featured in this article by John Boynton.  Check out the "Black Loft" project in our Inspiration gallery for more.

Last month, Carlielle Kitchen designer Kyla Hunt received a highly commended award in the New Zealand designer kitchen category for her black loft kitchen at an awards ceremony in Auckland.

Hunt worked alongside architect Jenny Walter and builders Van der Putten Construction to bring the black loft kitchen design to life.

The kitchen was made to compliment the home which is a black pavilion style house set in a lush country backdrop.

"The client basically wanted a wow kitchen, she wanted it to compliment the exterior of the house so she was keen on keeping the dark colours," Hunt said.

Many industrial and loft style elements were included in the design including timbers, steel beam lighting and stainless steel bench tops in the cooking area

The kitchen also includes a rough texture Macrocarpa timber wall and matte black cabinetry.

Hunt, who studied kitchen design at the Auckland School of Interior Design, did her apprenticeship at Carlielle Kitchens in Pukekohe and was offered a job after she graduated.

"I kind of just fell into the job perfectly when I finished my interior design course and I've never really looked back."

On the whole, Hunt still felt people were after simple kitchen designs.

However, she said there was a move away from white on white styles and more use of stone as well.

"The options these days of what you can do are endless so if you're someone who likes something a little bit different there's so much to consider.

"People are wanting to use a mix of materials, and a mix of colours just to break up their interior and just add interest."
